New and updated set assignments for Cambridge Nationals in Engineering
02 September 2020
We have made updates to the current set assignments for Cambridge Nationals in Engineering. We have also published a new collection of Engineering set assignments, which we have titled as ‘Set B’. The set assignments can be found from the ‘Assessment’ link on the left-hand side of the qualification pages.
The changes to the current set assignments are to:
- correct unit references and qualification numbers where these were incorrect
- add clarification to some of the set assignments, for either learners, or for teachers (and in some cases, for both)
- title the set assignments as Set A (to differentiate them from the new assignments published in September 2020 – Set B).
Although the guidance has been updated, there are no changes to the actual tasks, evidence requirements, marking criteria or the standard of work required.
What has changed for the current set assignments?
We have titled each of them as Set A, in order to differentiate them from the new set assignments, Set B, also published in September 2020.
We have also made some minor corrections and we've added learner or teacher guidance to certain units.
A summary of the change for each set assignment has been noted on the assignment front cover and is detailed in the table below:

What are the new set assignments that have been published?
We have published a new collection of the Engineering set assignments, and we have added ‘Set B’ to the front of these.
For Engineering Manufacture (units R110, R111 and R112), it is highly recommended that the learner manufactures the same component. Therefore it is important for these units that learners use either Set A or Set B and do not mix and match between the two sets.
Frequently asked questions
I have already taught the majority of a unit and my learners are about to start an assignment. Can I use either Set A or Set B?
You can choose whether to use Set A or Set B, depending on which scenario you prefer, or that suits your centre better. These assignments are for summative assessment (once the teaching phase is complete) so your teaching is not affected by the introduction of new assignments. The only difference is for Engineering Manufacture, (units R110, R111 and R112) – because it's highly recommended that learners manufacture the same product, it's advisable that learners use either Set A or Set B for all three units, and don’t mix and match between both sets.
My learners are part-way through an assignment. Do they have to switch to Set B?
No, a switch is not necessary. The tasks in Set B are different to those in Set A, but they're still assessing the learning for the same learning outcomes.
My learners have completed the older assignment (Set A), but I have not submitted it for moderation yet. Is any extra work needed before submission?
No extra work is needed but we recommend checking the updated versions of Set A that have been published as additional clarity has been provided, which you may find helpful. You can refer to the table in this update for details on the changes that have been made in Set A.
Can we choose whether to use Set A or Set B?
Yes, except for Engineering Manufacture (units R110, R111 and R112) – because it is highly recommended that learners manufacture the same product it is advisable that learners use either Set A or Set B for all three units, and don’t mix and match between both sets.
I am teaching a new cohort of students from September 2020 – will I have to change any of the teaching content?
These assignments are for summative assessment (once the teaching phase is complete), so your teaching is not affected by the introduction of new assignments.
