Access arrangements on the rise
14 November 2022
Access arrangements to allow skills and knowledge to be demonstrated by candidates with disabilities, temporary illnesses or special educational needs, increased by 14% in summer 2022 on the previous year*.
The 512,085 approved access arrangements in 2022 are a continuation of the upward trend seen in recent years.
Over 92% of schools and colleges (5,485 centres) had approved access arrangements for one or more of their candidates this year, up by nearly 5%.
Arrangements for 25% extra time made up 65% of all requests - a similar figure to the previous year but amounting to nearly 100,000 additional requests since 2018.
Requests for modified papers were up by nearly 5% to 61,125 on the 2019 figure – the last time that exams took place.
*Although public exams did not go ahead in 2021, centres were still asked to submit requests for access arrangements for their own assessments so a comparison of figures is possible.
