Formulae and equation sheets to be provided for one more year
16 November 2023
The DfE has asked Ofqual to consult on the use of formulae and equation sheets for maths, physics and combined science GCSE exams for one more year. This would mean that students would not have to memorise formulae, as they do in a normal year.
The DfE says that these proposed arrangements recognise the disruption this cohort of students experienced during their secondary education due to national school closures during the pandemic while these pupils were in years 7 and 8. The changes are intended to make the exams more accessible to students, while ensuring the qualifications remain valid and meaningful.
The consultation asks whether formula and equation sheets should be carried forward for summer 2024 and also seeks comments on regulatory and equality impacts. For GCSE maths, the arrangements would also apply to the November 2024 exams.
The DfE has confirmed that 2024 will be the final year where enhanced formulae and equation sheets will be available, returning to normal exam arrangements in 2025.
