Post-16 reforms paused by DfE
25 July 2024
The Department for Education has announced a review of the reforms to post-16 vocational and technical qualifications at Level 3 set in train by the last government.
This review will begin immediately with a one-year pause on the removal of 16-19 funding from qualifications assessed as overlapping with T Levels which were originally scheduled to have funding removed on 31 July 2024 (Construction and the Built Environment, Digital, Education and Early Years, and Health and Science).
This will mean that, subject to any commercial decisions made by Awarding Organisations, these qualifications can be funded for 16-19 year-old current and new students in the 2024-25 academic year. An announcement about the funding of qualifications in future years has not yet been made.
The review will aim to improve the quality of the overall qualifications landscape including how best to make T Levels open to as many young people as possible.
The outcomes of the review will be available by the end of the year. The findings will also be reflected in the independent Curriculum and Assessment Review.
