Prime Minister confirms ambition for the study maths to 18
17 April 2023
Rishi Sunak cites an "anti-maths mindset" as he renews his call for a focus on maths education for 16-18 year olds.
Three months after his initial announcement that all young people should be studying some form of maths to the age of 18, the Prime Minister has announced that a group of advisers including mathematicians and business representatives will gather evidence and provide advice on the essential maths knowledge and skills young people need to study and how this should be reflected in a post-16 education system.
The group of advisers, which includes Tim Oates CBE, Group Director of Assessment Research and Development, Cambridge University Press and Assessment, will also consider whether a new maths qualification is needed for 16-18 year olds to give young people better maths knowledge and equip them for their futures. Qualification options will be considered including the possible adaption of existing qualifications and programmes.
Research will also be conducted to better understand how other countries provide opportunities for maths education to the age of 18.
Further announcements include the development of a new maths qualification to support the professional development of maths teachers in primary schools from early next year.
The expert group of advisers will report its findings in July 2023.
