GCSE (9-1) History A
19 June 2019
We have made some updates to the specification and teaching content of GCSE (9-1) History A: Explaining the Modern World (J410).
Change to the date range
We have changed the date range of Component Group 1 International Relations study period. The revised date range for this component is 1918–c.1975 for first teaching from September 2019, and first assessment in 2021.
We have adapted the content accordingly, retained three distinct Key Topics and clarified the content to be covered during the period study.
The Historical Controversy section remains unchanged, though the title of the Cold War interpretation has been altered to ‘Changing interpretations of the responsibility for the Cold War’ for additional clarity.
Removing topics
Due to low entries, and to make sure we keep viable and robust GCSE qualifications in History, the following topics will have their last assessment in 2020:
- Poland 1956–1990
- Russia 1928–1964
As a not-for-profit organisation, we have invested heavily to make sure we include a diverse range of topics in our GCSE History qualification. We recognise the value in allowing teachers to make the most of their own specialisms, and to have the choice to construct the best course for themselves and their learners.
We have updated all relevant resources on our website. There are two versions of all resources impacted by these changes. Please make sure you are using the correct material for the correct year of entry.
