Clarification to mark schemes for GCSE Mathematics
09 January 2025
Following feedback from teachers, we’ve amended the mark schemes for GCSE Mathematics J560.
To improve clarity within the subject-specific marking instructions, we’ve amended point 24 as follows:
- ‘For methods not provided for in the mark scheme give as far as possible equivalent marks for equivalent work’ has changed to ‘For methods not provided for in the mark scheme (including visual representations such as bar models, ratio tables etc) give as far as possible equivalent marks for equivalent work. If in doubt, consult your Team Leader.’
You’ll see this amendment in the GCSE Mathematics mark schemes from the November 2024 series onwards.
Our assessors always give credit for correct methods, even if they are different from those in the mark scheme. This subject update confirms teaching methods like ‘teaching for mastery’ are fully accepted and will be credited.
There is no change in the approach to marking.
Please note, the November 2024 GCSE Mathematics mark schemes are available to view and download now from the Assessment > Exams > Question papers and marks schemes section on Teach Cambridge.
