New set products for GCSE Media Studies (J200) 06 July 2023

This subject update was originally published on 28 September 2022. On 5 October 2022, we corrected the following current set products; the TV show 'The Cuffs' is now 'Cuffs' and the TV show Avengers, Season 1, Episode 1, is now Avengers, Season 4, Episode 1.

We have now added a link to the GCSE Media Studies J200 specification (for first teaching September 2023), which includes the set products listed below. You can view and download the specification from Teach Cambridge.

For our GCSE Media Studies (J200) specification, we are replacing some of the set products for first teaching in September 2023 and first assessment in 2025.

Following an internal review and feedback from teachers, we’re introducing set products which are more contemporary, engaging and diverse for students. The changes will also help us to maintain the validity and reliability of our assessments.

These changes are limited to one new TV show, one new episode for the current TV show and two pairs of new music videos. We’ve chosen this level of change to make sure the new set products can be introduced and managed by teachers effectively.

We’ve listed the set product changes below:

Media form Current set product New set product
TV show Cuffs, Season 1, Episode 1 Vigil, Season 1, Episode 1
TV show Avengers, Season 4, Episode 1 Avengers, Season 4, The Gravediggers
Music video Pair 1: Wheatus – Teenage Dirtbag and Avril Lavigne – Sk8ter Boi no change
Music video Pair 2: Mark Ronson, Bruno Mars – Uptown Funk and Beyoncé – If I Were a Boy Beyonce – Brown Skin Girl and The Lathums – I’ll Get By
Music video Pair 3: The Vamps – Somebody To You ft. Demi Lovato and Little Mix – Black Magic Arlo Parks – Hope and Harry Styles – Adore You
Music video Pair 4: Tinie Tempah, Jess Glynne – Not Letting Go and Paloma Faith – Picking Up the Pieces no change

There are no changes to other set products.

We value the feedback we receive about teaching support, so to make sure teachers are supported in teaching these new set products we’ll be providing up-to-date support material before first teaching begins.

We have updated our GCSE Media Studies J200 specification (for first teaching September 2023) to include the changes and how to access the set media products. You can view and download the specification from Teach Cambridge.

If you have any queries about this update, please call our Customer Support Centre on 01223 553998 or email us at media@ocr.org.uk.
