Symbol equations for GCSE Combined Science and GCSE Physics specifications
28 January 2022
In December 2021, we carried out a survey asking whether it would be helpful if we introduced symbol equations to our GCSE Combined Science (J250/J260) and GCSE Physics (J249/J259) specifications. We had a large number of centres responding and the vast majority told us they would find the addition of symbol equations helpful for teaching and for students.
Based on the feedback, we will be publishing updated specifications with the symbol equations added and we'll notify you when these are available. The symbol equations will appear in the data sheet for first assessment 2023.
Where equations are provided to candidates in questions, these will continue to be written in words rather than symbols.
Endorsed and non-endorsed materials use a variety of symbols but for clarity we'll be creating a single set of defined symbols for our specifications. Candidates can use the new OCR symbol equations in their question paper responses, but it is not a requirement. It will continue to be the case that:
- Candidates can continue to use word equations in their question responses instead of symbols.
- The marking approach to calculation-based questions requiring the use of equations will not change
