Entry Level Art and Design – R310
23 April 2024
As the deadline to submit internally assessed marks approaches (15 May), we have provided guidance on preparing moderated candidate work for Entry Level Art and Design (R310) to support you.
This guidance supplements sections 4c, 5d and 5e of the specification and section 4 of the Teacher Handbook.
Preparing candidate work for moderation
Entry Level Art and Design is moderated ‘remotely’, which means you mark the work and submit marks to OCR and then send a sample of student work to OCR. This can be done either by uploading an electronic portfolio (moderated: upload) or by posting student work to OCR (moderated: postal). How you send your sample depends on the option you chose when making your entries.
What student work do I need to upload or send via post to OCR?
If you have 15 candidates or fewer, you need to submit work for all your candidates.
If you have more than 15 candidates, when you have submitted your marks, your exams officer will receive an email from OCR with the list of candidates who make up your moderation sample. You then need to prepare these candidates’ work for moderation. The work must be sent to OCR within three working days of receiving the sample request.
You are not required to submit all of the work produced during the course for each candidate within the sample:
- For Component 1 Portfolio, with guidance from their teacher, candidates must select and organise work for submission that demonstrates the best of their achievement across all four Assessment Objectives. You must make sure the candidate work submitted clearly reflects the marks you have awarded.
- For Component 2 OCR Set Task, you should submit candidates’ preparatory study and personal response.
Which forms must accompany the candidate work?
You must complete and send the following forms:
Preparing work to upload
If you are submitting work via the digital upload option, you need to take photographs of each candidate’s work in the sample so they can be uploaded.
When photographing work:
- Photograph both the whole board and each individual element separately.
- Make sure any text is legible.
- Show the size and scale of objects such as ceramic or clay models by including something such as a hand, cup or computer mouse within the photograph.
- Capture the 3-dimensional aspect of any object.
We strongly recommend creating a PowerPoint presentation for each candidate to collate the photographs of the work you are submitting:
- The PowerPoint must include the centre number, candidate number and marks awarded.
- Use title slides to clearly separate the photographs into Component 1 Portfolio and Component 2 OCR Set Task. These title slides should include the theme set by the centre for Component 1 Portfolio and the theme chosen from those set by OCR for Component 2 OCR Set Task (see the themes document).
- Slides can include multiple photographs.
- There should be no more than 20 slides for each component.
- The candidate cover sheet can either be included within the PowerPoint as a screenshot or uploaded as a separate file.
If you are unable to collate the candidate work into a PowerPoint presentation for each candidate, you will need to submit them using one of the other accepted file formats as detailed in section 5e of the specification.
You need to upload the files you have prepared via Submit for Assessment. See the OCR website for step-by-step instructions on how to do this.
Preparing work to send via post
If you are sending work via the postal option, we will send your exams officer:
- Labels and packaging to help you prepare your sample for moderation
- Return labels identifying where you need to send your sample.
To prepare your sample:
- Collate each candidate’s work, e.g. in a folder.
- Identify which work is being submitted for Component 1 Portfolio and Component 2 OCR Set Task, e.g. by using file dividers.
- Label each piece of work (e.g. painting, poster, sketchbook) with the candidate number, centre number and marks awarded – you can use the labels provided for this.
- Attach a candidate cover sheet to each candidate’s work.
You can choose to send photographs of candidate work instead of actual candidate work. We would recommend you photograph large or fragile pieces to prevent damage happening to the original work.
